Winter is a great time to get on the stream, but like all seasons, one must be prepared for winter conditions. The winter video covers important points to help make your winter fishing trip a successful one. Below are some helpfull hints from our Winter Volume of Fly Fishing Large Western Rivers.

Six things to remember when fishing in the winter are:

The Deschuttes River in Oregon is the stage for our Winter edition of Fly Fishing Large Western Rivers1. The rule of 1/5 -
Don't get confused by the expanse of water in a large river. Fish the 1/5 closest to your bank as if it were a small stream and just forget about the rest of it.

2. Eddies -
Pay close attention to eddies, both large and small ones. They concentrate food and provide ideal feeding areas for large fish.

3. Time of day
-
Concentrate your fishing when insects and fish are most active. In the winter that will be from late morning to early afternoon, typically 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Rick Hafele explains the water type on the Deschuttes River in our Winter Fly Fishing DVD4. Observe -
Observation is a key in any season. Spend time looking at the insects in the stream. Use binoculars to view what's on the water and what the fish are really eating. And watch the rise forms when fish are feeding to determine if surface or subsurface flies should be used.

5. Carry the right flies -
Once you've observed what food is available to fish, select a fly pattern that matches its size, shape and color, and present the fly naturally to the fish.

Go prepared for windy, cold and changeable weather and water conditions with the right clothes and equipment.

Remember fishing is for fun. Catching fish definitely makes it more fun, but enjoy the whole experience. Laugh, at least a little, when that big one breaks off or another fly is lost in a tree. And if you can't laugh at yourself you can always laugh at someone else!
