VOLUME #3, SUMMER
(55 min)
Are you ready for the Summer fun Rick Hafele and John Smeraglio have cooked up for you? As the weather heats up so do the unpredictable natures of our two hosts. Shot on location on the Deschutes river in Central Oregon. A must see edition if you are planning a trip to do some fly fishing on a large Western river.
Summer! When the fish are jumping and the
water is low. This is a time when the almost
continuous activity of spring begins to show
definite ups and downs throughout the day.
In the summer video we'll show you how to
interpret the different moods of summer fishing.
Some tips to remember include:
1.
Time of Day: Summer hatches are concentrated in the morning
and evenings, especially on warm sunny days. Mornings and evenings are also
key periods for behavioral drift of nymphs and larvae, making these periods
a great time for nymph fishing.
2.
Collect & Observe: It's always important to find out what fish
are eating. In the summer this may change from day to day or even hour to hour.
Take a little time to collect some insect samples so you can select the right
fly.
3.
Don't forget terrestrials:Terrestrial insects form an important part of the
trout's diet in the summer. Their activity peaks in the afternoon and they
are most available on windy days.
4.
Be sneaky! Rivers are low and clear during the summer, so fish spook easily.
Wade carefully and look for areas out of the sun - shadows under trees
and deep pockets behind boulders - where fish find food and cover.
5.
Be prepared: In the summer you might find yourself casting small spinner patterns
over selective fish in the morning and large grasshopper patterns into
the wind in the afternoon. Make sure you have the right flies, a selection of
tippets and a rod or two that can handle a range of conditions.
Relax: In the summer
fish action may be intense but brief. Don't expect to catch fish all day long.
Summer is a great time to sit back, relax and catch-up on your reading.
Remember catching fish isn't the only reason to go fishing!
