VOLUME
#2, SPRING (47 min)
Rich Hafele and John Smeraglio continue their educational antics in our second volume on Fly Fishing Large Western Rivers. This DVD they continue their informative study of the Deschutes River in Oregon.
Spring
is a great time to be anywhere on a stream or lake fishing. Insect hatches abound
and fish are hungry and active as waters begin to warm. This video will help
decipher all these new activity of spring. A few thing to keep in mind include:
1.
Multiple or complex hatches are common in the spring: This
means you need to carefully observe adult insect activity and if at
all possible collect insect samples from the stream bottom.
2.
Main hatch activity, and therefore fish feeding activity, in the spring is between
11 am and 5 or 6 pm. Be prepared with the right flies and leaders when the hatch
activity begins.
3.
Fish Feeding: Because of the variety of insects on the water change flies often if you aren't
catching fish. During multiple hatches fish may switch what they
are feeding on from hour to hour.
4.
Watch rise forms of feeding trout for clues about what stage or type of insect
they are eating.
5.
Practice your casting techniques. Remember good presentation is almost always
more important than having the perfect fly pattern.
6.
Finally - laugh a little while you're out there. Remember you've just spent
hundreds if not thousands of dollars to try and out wit something
with a brain the size of a pea so you can lead it around at the end of
a string and then let it go. Sounds pretty funny to us!!
