Fly Fishing Large Western Rivers

VOLUME #4, FALL (58 min)

The Fall glow on the water behind him, John Smeraglio explains the water typeThe last in our four DVD series on Fly Fishing Large Western Rivers. Things are cooling off a bit after Summer and the conditions in the river are changing also. Again, Rick Hafele and John Smeraglio have their unique way of teaching you the things you need to know during this time of year on the larger rivers.

Fall is the last rush of activity before cold winter conditions set in again. Compared to summer fall often presents more challenges and difficult fishing conditions. This video will explain what to do when the fishing is tough! Some things to remember for fall include:

Rick Hafele is using a microcsope to tie his extra tiny fly pattern in this scene from the Fall edition of Fly Fishing Large Western Rivers1. Think small: Small insects, small flies and selective fish are the norm in the fall. Make sure you are ready with the right flies and leaders.

2. Presentation - presentation - presentation!  While the right fly pattern is important, presentation is  usually the difference between success and failure. In the fall presentation can be even more critical due to the low, clear water conditions.

3. Time of Day: Peak fish activity in the fall reverts back to mid-day. Somewhere between 11am and  5pm will usually find the best insectactivity and most active fish feeding.

4. Walk softly: Approach the water carefully anytime of year, but especially in the fall  when the low,  clear water conditions make fish particularly spooky. Don't play drums too close to the river in the fall.

5. Observe: Use all your observational skills - bug collecting, binoculars, etc. - to identify what fish are feeding on and where they are feeding.
